How to achieve greater comfort with lower costs

While some scientific research has indicated that the purpose of a zebra’s stripes is to keep it cool, most people know better than to decorate their buildings with zebra print. As such, facility and building managers must find other ways of regulating the temperature of a building. However, this is no easy task, as Maria Torrisi, business development manager of building management system provider JMartans Automation, explains.
It’s reported that to meet Malta’s 2020 renewable and energy efficiency targets, businesses will need to invest between 30 and 64 million euros. With significant pressure from the European Government to reduce carbon emissions, facility managers are trying to implement new technologies to improve energy efficiency while providing the same level of comfort for occupants and visitors.
Traditionally, managers have controlled the temperature of a facility with scheduled timer systems. Reprogrammed for each season, the timer would automatically turn the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) system on and off. While this sounds practical, we all know from experience that the weather differs each day and, in turn, so does a building’s temperature requirements.
This is why JMartans Automation is urging more businesses to look at monitoring and controlling the services, like energy consumption in their building, with building energy management systems (BEMSs). A BEMS can collect a buildings data in real-time and can be used to configure the building’s HVAC facilities to suit the requirements for that given temperature.
For example, with BEMSs the system monitors both the room and outside temperature. With this data the BEMS learns the characteristics of the space and determines the most efficient time to turn a building’s service on and off. This can also include managing the temperature in different areas of a building, depending on whether it is occupied or not.
Installing a BEMS also makes monitoring the operation and maintenance of equipment easier. The system combines several engineering systems, to report faults and adjust controls remotely. By providing managers with a simple way of controlling the central heating and other features of a building, BEMSs make it possible for managers to reduce energy costs and improve overall efficiency.
Since most your visitors won’t boast zebra stripes to regulate their temperature, the installation of a BEMS can make the task of adjusting a building’s temperature to a satisfactory level an easier task that helps your visitors feel right at home.
