BCGA elects new national president to drive forward the ‘Invisible Industry’

18 July 2016

The British Compressed Gases Association has appointed a new national president to support the trade body’s continued growth.

Tony Edwards (pictured) has pledged to do ‘more of the same’ in the elected role, building on the continuing success of the BCGA and its growing membership base.
Mr Edwards, the Managing Director of Nottingham-based Luxfer Gas Cylinders, takes over the national president’s role from Richard Gearing, Head of Regional Operations at BOC UK & Ireland.

Mr Gearing was instrumental in developing the BCGA’s ‘Invisible Industry’ strategy, which promotes a positive understanding of the compressed gases sector and the benefits association members bring to the UK.

Working closely in support of BCGA Chief Executive Doug Thornton, Mr Edwards will help raise awareness of the sector and enhance relationships with government and other key representatives during his two-year term in office. He will also support the association’s active role in influencing safety.

Mr Edwards said: “I am delighted to have been elected to the role and look forward to my term of office.

“Richard Gearing has done an excellent job for the past two years and I hope I can follow in those footsteps.

“The Association is extremely professionally run by Doug Thornton and his team. It has attracted many new members in recent years, which in turn has led to a healthy financial position that has enabled us to make continued investment in a range of initiatives for the good of the BCGA and the wider industry.
“We need to continue this work and constantly look for new ways to invest for the tangible benefit of our members and our industry.

“My objectives are to deliver ‘more of the same,’ supporting the BCGA’s many strengths and the great work carried out in recent years.

“I am particularly keen to continue raising the profile of the sector through the ‘Invisible Industry’ initiative, ensuring there is greater awareness of the important contribution it makes to the British economy and also to the wellbeing of the companies and people who reside here.

“The sector needs a strong representative voice to get its issues and concerns heard in government circles and the BCGA does this well.

“I look forward to supporting the team in this important area and helping to identify ways to enhance these relationships even further.

“Of major importance is the BCGA’s role in representing safety and we have made significant progress in addressing important industry challenges, such as stopping gas abuse, reducing metal theft and curbing rogue trade.

“We need to be vigilant in these areas, particularly at a time when many of the government departments charged with implementation and supervision are under severe financial pressure.

“It’s an honour to represent the sector as national president. On a personal level this is only my third year working in this industry and so I see it as an opportunity to broaden my understanding and the key issues and opportunities it faces.”

Founded in 1901, the BCGA is the UK membership body for the British compressed gases industry. Its mission is to ensure safety in the use, storage, transportation and handling of compressed gases.
BCGA members employ 19,000 people directly and account for an annual turnover of £2.7 billion.

Members of BCGA operate in a highly-regulated industry and work together on technical, safety, health and environmental issues, both within their own and customers’ working environments.
